This is so overdue. One of the coolest and most vicious villains in superhero history is very likely to get his own franchise.

With Heath Ledger's villainous Joker drawing attention and boxoffice dollars, Sony is moving forward with VENOM a potential SPIDER-MAN spinoff based on a bad guy, reports The Hollywod Reporter.
This is great news, as I really loved the VENOM comics. Like most fans, I was greatly disappointed by the way the character was treated and dealt with in SPIDER-MAN 3. According to THR TOPHER GRACE will NOT play VENOM in the spinoff, as Sony is aiming for a bigger star.

I keep you posted as this will certainly generate more interest and exciting news in the future...

In the next issue of Empire Magazine, there will be a big special about WATCHMEN with a bunch of new infos and pictures. Here's a little impression (click to enlarge):

Empire Online has published the UK poster of the new DE NIRO and PACINO flick RIGHTEOUS KILL:

The movie starts September 12th i the U.S. and September 26th in the U.K.

According to Deadline Hollywood, MIKE MEYERS picked up writing on a new AUSTIN POWERS SEQUEL.

As Myers has previously said, this fourth installment of the super spy spoof movie series will focus on Austin's arch-villain Dr. Evil and his son. "It's very personal with a father and son theme loosely based on his own life"

This could be MEYERS last chance for reanimating his Hollywood career, after bombing with the terrible LOVE GURU this summer. MEYERS is teaming up with MIKE McCULLERS again. Together they've penned the last two AUSTIN POWERS sequels.

HARRY POTTER fans go nuts now: The teaser trailer for HALF-BLOOD PRINCE was just released in glorious HD. Click the poster to see the teaser.

A brandnew T-4 teaser poster was released at Comic Con. It shows the T-600 who seems to be coming right from the battlefield... Question is, how is the other guy looking? Hopefully not too good, because at Comic Con director McG said that T-4 is likely to be R rated.
The new ROBOCOP too btw...

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL is one of the most successful movies of all times, grossing $743 million worldwide.
If you earn that much money, not even counting DVD sales, another sequel is always an option. GEORGE LUCAS talked to the SUNDAY TIMES about a possible fifth INDY flick.
Here is a snippet:

"We were hoping for box-office figures like that, which is, ultimately, with inflation, what the others have done, within 10%," Lucas explains. "So, we squeaked up there. Really, though, it was a challenge getting the story together and getting everybody to agree on it. Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying 'I want it this way' and 'I want it that way', whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, 'We'll do it this way' — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it's a little hard on a practical level.

"If I can come up with another idea that they like, we'll do another. Really, with the last one, Steven wasn't that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we'd like to take. I'm in the future; Steven's in the past. He's trying to drag it back to the way they were, I'm trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that. It's kind of a hybrid of our own two ideas, so we'll see where we are able to take the next one."

Dear George, no more of your "takin' it to the next level CGI iz the shizznit" bullshit. Didn't you learn anything from the DARK KNIGHT? Nothing? AT ALL? Ok... I give up.

This could be the next contender for the Acadamy Award for best foreign picture. It's a german production based on the book by STEFAN AUST and a screenplay by BERND EICHINGER featuring MORITZ BLEIBTREU. It's called DER BAADER-MEINHOF KOMPLEX and deals with the german terrorist group The Red Army Faction (RAF), which organized bombings, robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in the late 1960s and '70s.

Check out the trailer:

The trailer to OLIVER STONES biopic about GEORGE W. BUSH, simply called "W", just leaked. The trailer was supposed to air on ACCESS HOLLYWOOD for the first time, but someone uploaded it to YouTube, which is... kinda nice.

Comic Con will soon be known as Sequel Con. Another franchise will be reactivated and this time it's really a suprise. SAM RAIMI (SPIDER-MAN) has talked about a possible EVIL DEAD sequel and that he's planning to work on it this weekend with his brother Ivan reports CinemaBlend. No word about when he expects to shoot the movie or about the cast (seriously, there is no way it can be done without BRUCE CAMPBELL, so I don't consider this as a something that has to be announced seperately).

RAIMI is currently working on a new horror flick called DRAG ME TO HELL featuring JUSTIN LONG (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD). He is also planning to produce the REMAKE of EVIL DEAD 2. So it might take some time until we see EVIL DEAD 4. Nevertheless I'm already hyped!

Besides TOY STORY 3, PIXAR ist currently working on UP. At the Comic Con in San Diego, DISNEY released a first glimpse of what you might call a teaser. It's not much, but at least we know now, that it's about a flying house, some balloons and an old dude hanging around on a porch...
Check it out here.

Great news. DARREN ARONOFSKY (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) has officialy been anounced by MGM as director for the new ROBOCOP flick. This is very good news. ARONOFSKY, much like CHRISTOPHER NOLAN or DAVID FINCHER is one of the guys that can give a film a more dark'ish and raw feeling. DAVID SELF (ROAD TO PERDITION) will write the screenplay, so we're in for some serious shit. This could very well be great contender for THE DARK KNIGHT...

More on this over at Hollywoodreporter.

Two brand new RED SONJA posters were published at the Comic Con in San Diego. Guess what: It's a pale chick licking some blood. Haven't seen that for a while...

SAW 5 TEASER

Not much to say. It's Saw. People will get tortured by a creepy voice. Yawn.

IGN posted a new clip of PUNISHER: WARZONE today, that was shown in San Diego at Comic Con. This could easily be the most brutal piece of action flick since RAMBO 4 . Check it out:

Nuff said.

What a week of good news that is. First ANCHORMAN, than TRON and NOW HAROLD & KUMAR. It's sequel time in Hollywood it seems. The secend stoner flick with KAL PENN and JOHN CHO grossed almost $ 40 million at the Box Office and is set for release on DVD on Tuesday.
Now Variety reports, that WARNER BROS. is planing a Trilogy with the HAROLD & KUMAR franchise. Little is known though concerning the plot. JON HURWITZ and HAYDEN SCHLOSSBERG who wrote both feature and directed the last one, will team up again with PENN and CHO for the thir time. Great effin news folks!

What item did EVERY kid in the world wanted to have, after watching BACK TO THE FUTURE 2? That's right: A HOVERBOARD.
No you can make you dream come true. All you need is $ 30000 an place your bid on eBay.
It's one of two existing original HOVERBOARDS, that were used in movie.

CAUTION: DO NOT USE ABOVE WATER UNLESS IT'S A KILLERBOARD!

Comic-Con is going on in San Diego and I wish I was there. The lucky folks out there get to see clips of Watchmen, the new Terminator and all kinds of good stuff. And I am not just talking the trailers that have been making the rounds. Actual clips from those upcomig blockbusters. But better than that, Disney revealed something today that made me weep and regain faith. Faith that there is good in this world and clowns and little girls were never meant to be scary: Tron 2 is coming. Or as it was called at the Comic-Con: TR2N. According to aintitcool.com Around 3 minutes of footage was shown. And yes, supposedly Jeff Bridges is back. Can't wait for the dude to light it up again. The big screen that is. ;-)

PS: Go see The Dark Knight.

MAY PAYNE is coming to the big screen in October. MARK WAHLBERG and the beautiful MILA KUNIS will star in the movie directed by JOHN MOORE (BEHIND ENEMY LINES). The trailer already kicked ass and now two more posters were published:

Great news folks. ANCHORMAN is my favourite comedy flick and probably the funniest movie I know. WILL FERRELL and ADAM MCKAY announced today, that they are working on a sequel, bringing RON BURGUNDY to the 80's!
"The audience will now allow us to do even crazier stuff," McKay says, "and that's really all we're looking for in our careers." Read more at Entertainment Weekly.
Big news! I'm so waiting for this one.

DIABLO CODY Academy Award winning writer for JUNO is the scribe for a new horror-comedy called JENNIFER'S BODY. FOX ATOMIC has just released the official movie poster. Haven't we seen almost the same poster just a few day ago for ALAN BALL'S (SIX FEET UNDER) new series called TRUE BLOOD? Great minds think alike, I guess... or they employ the same creativ director...

Variety reports
, that MTV is teaming up with LOU ADLER the producer of the original cult classic, to work on a ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW REMAKE. There is no word about a possible cast and timetable out yet, though ADLER is quotet that he "like to see it shown a year from this coming Halloween, but that's up to MTV".
The original ROCKY HORROR movie is considered a cult movie, that grossed over $ 140 million over the past three decades and starred TIM CURRY, SUSAN SARANDON and singer MEATLOAF.

LOST creator JJ. ABRAMS is currently working on the new STAR TREK movie that's hitting the big screen in May 2009. Though I'm not a big fan of the STAR TREK franchise, I have to admit that the new cast kinda got me going: SIMON PEGG (HOT FUZZ, SHAUN OF THE DEAD) as Scotty, JOHN CHO (HAROLD & KUMAR) as Sulu or ZACHARY QUINTO ("SYLAR" from HEROES) as Spock. Talking about Spock. Check out the new teaser posters that have just been reveiled. QUINTO is fucking LEONARD NIMOY. I can't tell the difference between 'em.

More STAR TREK faces here.

In LIAR LIAR, JIM CAREY was forced to tell the truth by all means. Now CAREY stars in YES MAN where he can't say "no". The teaser trailer has just been released:

Check out the HD QuickTime version here

IAN MCKELLEN confirmed at the DARK KNIGHT premiere in London, that he will return as GANDALF in THE HOBBIT as Empire reports:

"Well, I haven’t had the contract yet but it’s everyone’s intention that I play Gandalf so yes, I will be returning to the role. Although it’s not until 2010, I’m very much excited about returning"

It's still not decided who will play BILBO, but rumor has it that JAMES MCAVOY is one of the studio execs favourites for the role...

The Hollywoodreporter has news about WARNER BROS. upcoming Superhero flick called CAPESHOOTERS. Appearently BRYAN SINGER (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN) is attached to direct the movie.
CAPESHOOTERS is based on not yet published graphic-novel by YOUNG BLOOD creator ROB LIEFELD.

The new HBO show from SIX FEET UNDER creator ALAN BALL has now a poster. It's pretty cool. I like Vampire-Chicks.

The Hollywood Reporter has some news about the prequel to BATTLESTAR GALCTICA called CAPRICA. What was planned as a "backdoor" pilot, dealing with the events before CYLON WAR I
and about the "creation" of the Cylons, man made robot that eventually decimated humanity.
Creator RONALD D. MOORE talks about the possibility of CAPRICA being a whole series instead of a pilot:

“We’re not sure if it’s going to air as a backdoor pilot,” says Sci Fi Channel's executive vp of programming Mark Stern at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’re going to take a look at it and maybe just order it as a series from there. We are going to take delivery on it in a couple of weeks and then decide whether to air it as a standalone movie or as the premiere of a new series.”

Check out the full scoop here.

*UPDATE*

The Caprica Teaser:

As reported THE DARK KNIGHT took the number 1 spot at this weeks Box Office. But some people decided to watch MAMMA MIA! instead of Batman. The muscial featuring PIERCE BROSNAN scored respectable $ 27 million.

BO Chart from IMDB

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S DARK KNIGHT is on a record breaking rampage. The movie is breaking almost every record there is, grossing $ 66 million on its FIRST day. SPEED RACER took $ 40 million until today... do the math.
THE DARK KNIGHT is very likely to break every Box Office record that has ever been. But that's not all. The movie took the number one spot at the IMDB Top 250 list, scoring an average user rating of 9.7 (24.000 votes thus far) making it the best movie of all times according to the largest movie community on earth.

*UPDATE*
According to Variety THE DARK KNIGHT grossed a total of $ 155.3 million on it's first weekend, making it the best opening movie for a three-day-weekend of all time and beating SPIDER-MAN 3 who grossed $ 151 million on it's opening weekend.

Before I start talking about Dark Knight, I have to tell you about my history concerning the Batman movies. I think that might help understand my view of the film.
Adam West is god. Seriously I liked the old ones. Yes, they were cheesy and had an underlying theme of guy-on-guy action thanks to Robin, but they had their own style and charm. Especially the Batmobil. But the old show doesn't really play into this review since it is just its own thing.

That said it is time to look at the modern movies which started with Tim Burton's Batman. Ultimately this is the one that people will mostly compare Dark Knight to, because it also has The Joker (played by Jack "crazy-smile Jack" Nicholson) in it. I like Burton's version of Batman. I thought the two films were dark, captured a comic feel and had great villains (Michelle Pfeiffer in a latex catsuit... Meeeeoooow!). I also like Michael Keaton as Batman. Many people say his performance in the Batsuit was too "constricted" but people have to understand, that the suit back then was made of materials that didn't really let the actor move freely. And I liked, that in order to look around, he had to turn his whole upper body. Made him look more badass. Over the years, of course, better and more flexible versions of the Batsuit were made as the creators of the movies found out which materials worked better.
Joel Schumacher's films I don't really like. Batman Forever started the downward spiral and Batman & Robin sealed the deal. Both films feel too "plasticy" and "neon". Like it was a cheesy musical. Seriously, Arnie ice skating around was just horrible. And that whole Robin thing sucked monkeyballs. So it was clear, for Batman to live on, he had to have a complete makeover.
The guy to do just that, was Chris Nolan with Batman Begins. As the name suggests his version focuses on how Bruce Wayne becomes the Batman and also explains his being. It was a more realistic approach. One that tried to make the character more believable and darker. And while I do like it, I also have problems with it. First off, I hated how Bruce Wayne changed his voice whenever he wore the Batsuit. Many will argue that of course, he needed to do that so he would not be recognized. But to me, it felt like a joke. I didn;t know whether I should take that serious or laugh. Second, I didn't like the whole Ninja-temple thing. Third, it was too obvious that Liam Neeson's character wasn't dead. Fourth, the new Batmobil just doesn't do it for me. And fifth, why was the movie so "yellowish", almost sepia-like? So while I think it is a good movie and definitely way better than Schumacher's Batman, I also believe it is overrated and doesn't quite reach Burton's vision. So now that you know how I feel about Batman up to this point, let's get it on! Dont' worry, there are no spoilers in my review.

Batman is back to clean up the streets of Gotham City. But he is not accepted by everybody. People still frown upon his ways of being above the law. Still he gets the job done because nobody else does. Until someone new shows up in town: The Joker. And he is not only creating fear amongst the citizens of the city but also has the crime bosses somewhat scared.
Thank god Batman is not alone though, Detective Gordon ist still on his side and the new District Attorney Harvey Dent also looks very promising as a new ally. Rachel Dawes is back as well but this time played by the wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal. In my opinion, she is a better choice anyhow. Never cared for Katie Holmes too much. But let's cut to the chase, how good is the movie?

Dark Knight is the best Batman movie ever made. And not only that, I think it is the best superhero movie ever made. By far. And this is coming from someone who is not the biggest fan of Batman Begins. After watching this flick you realize just how far behind other superhero movies are. It puts a movie like Hellboy 2 to shame. It also puts Jack Nicholson to shame. What Heath Ledger delivered makes Nicholson's Joker look like a Kindergarten teacher. Unfortunately with Ledgers untimely death, the joke is definitely on us. It angers me to know that such talented man left life so early.

So why is this movie so good? Because it tells a good, compelling story and has incredible characters. The most noteworthy of course Heath Ledger. His Joker is so intense and incredibly sinister. Like nothing I have ever seen in a movie like that before. It is exactly what I wanted to see from the Joker. A creator of chaos and maestro of destruction filled to the brim with crazyness. Critics all around have been saying his act is worth an oscar. And I completely agree.

And don't be fooled by the PG-13 rating. This movie is the darkest and grittiest superhero film you can come across. It is dirty, has great action and fights in it, yet it still manages to make you like and feel for the characters. Also the film remains believable. Batman comes across even better in this film and so do supporting roles such as the great Michael Caine as Alfred.

Visually there also were some changes. The creators did away with the "yellow"-look the city had at nighttime in Batman Begins. Very thankful for that. Also this is one of the movie tries to stay away from CGI as much as possible. Well except one half thing, but I can't really go into that without giving away too much.

The movie does have some flaws though. The second half is almost a bit too long and doesn't quite keep up the exhilarating pace of the first. Also there some tiny plotholes. Still, the flaws in this movie are minor. I can even live with Batman's voice.

Dark Knight is action and drama packed in an 152 minute long rollercoaster that will leave you breathless. And thanks to Heath Ledger's Joker we have seen the best evil performance to date. This is the movie that every other comic adaptation will try to beat, if that is even possible. And they have lot of hard work ahead of them.

Any PRISON BREAK goons out there? Season 4 launches on September 1st.
A first glimpse launches when you hit play:

NBC has released a new trailer for the upcoming season of HEROES, that premiers on September 22nd:

Let's just all pretend, there never was a writers strike and a ridiculous season two and hope for the best. This is the last chance for TIM KRING. Either the shows goes back on track or will be a proud member of the MATRIX TRILOGY BOOK OF FUCKED UP SEQUELS.

Surprise, surprise. SCHWARZENEGGER is NOT going to star in TERMINATOR SALVATION. This sucks. It sucks even more, because the story deals with the T-800. Rumors had it, that they were planing to using a CGI version of SCHWARZENEGGER (would've probably looked like BEOWULF or something like that...). At least that's not longer the case, as the producers have found a new Austrian Bodybuilder to embody the T-800:

Dude's name is ROLAND KICKINGER and according to Aintitcool.com he once trained with ARNIE. Ain't that something?
Word on the street is, that the T-1000 is coming back aswell. The T-1000 will be played by someone who once had lunch with ROBERT PATRICK...

Another classic picture is getting a remake. Variety reports that spanish production company ATLANTIA CANARIAS is teaming up with producers Branko Lustig (SCHINDLERS LIST, GLADIATOR) and John Kelly (THE BLACK DAHLIA) for a remake of PAPILLON.
Shooting will begin in May 2009 and the budget is $ 90 million.

Atlantia closed a deal a few weeks back to option movie and TV rights to Henri Charriere's autobiography, immortalized in the 1973 film starring STEVE McQUEEN and DUSTIN HOFFMAN.
No word about the director/cast so far.

WATCHMEN is one of my favourite comic books. This is like the LORD OF THE RINGS of comics. Now ZACH SNYDER (300, DAWN OF THE DEAD) is directing the big screen adaption. And I tell you what: I think that's great. Many die hard WATCHMEN fans didn't want that movie to be made in the first place. Fuck that shit. ZACH SNYDER did an excellent job with his 300 adaption. It's okay, if you didn't like 300. But if you compare the comic with the movie, you have to cut the man some slack. He took a medicore comic and turned into a cool movie. Now he takes a masterpiece of a comic, and to be honest after watching the trailer, this will be a great adaption. I have no doubt in that!
Now, without any further ado. The glorious WATCHMEN trailer that you were supposed to watch before THE DARK KNIGHT:

*UPDATE*
WATCH THE TRAILER IN HD!

THE DARK KNIGHT makes trailer fans happy. The internet makes the DARK KNIGHT look stupid! Ha! All the trailers, that were set to premiere with THE DARK KNIGHT already leaked to the net. Tough shit Batman!
This is the new flick by RIDLEY SCOTT (GLADIATOR) starring RUSSEL CROWE and LEONARDO DiCAPRIO. Movie is called BODY OF LIES and here goes the trailer:

FOX will premiere the new season of 24 with a full-lenght TV MOVIE that works as a prequel for season 7.
The movie will be aired on November 23rd- Season 7 starts in Janurary 2009.
And here is the Trailer for the prequel:

FERRELL is attached to play the title character, a racist who, after a prank gone awry, develops a split personality.
TWO FACE is written by VINCE GILLIGAN (HANCOCK, BREAKING BAD) and produced by MARK JOHNSON and JIMMY MILLER who're still searching for a director.

J.D. is dropping of Sacred Heart Hospital!
The SCRUBS star, who is currently attached to the movie OPEN HEARTS as writer, director and actor will drop out of SCRUBS after the next season, according to creator and producer BILL LAWRENCE.
Season 8, that's currently shot, will deal with J.D. departure from the hospital. Braff may or may not guest star and/or direct in possible upcoming seasons of SCRUBS. That's right, LAWRENCE said the show will continue without BRAFF!
More about this at Variety.

This is funny. THE DARK KNIGHT is opening this week and it's directed by CHRISTOPHER NOLAN who's known for his (literally) dark style in movies like MEMENTO, INSOMNIA or THE PRESTIGE. But what if MICHAEL BAY, the not-so-subtle director of movies like ARMAGEDDON, BAD BOYS and PEARL HARBOR would have made THE DARK KNIGHT?
Well read the first pages of his version here.

Note: Of course this is a fake script.
In a recent Interview with Entertainment Weekly, BAY was asked what he thought about that parody of his style. He was subtle as always saying "That's complete bullshit. I only read one line of it...".

I guess his sense of humor is in slowmotion aswell...

I dunno if this is a leak or if it's official. But let me say this: Who cares?!
The teaser for McGs TERMINATOR: SALVATION minus ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER plus CHRISTIAN BALE is out. In Hi-Res too!

Check it out here.

Remember the mid 80's? It was the prime era of Hollywood. Movies back than were fantastic and new. I'm talking movies like BACK TO THE FUTURE, EXPLORERS, E.T., THE GOONIES, FLIGHT OF THE NAVIGATOR or MONSTER SQUAD. I was a kid when I saw those movies and though I love todays flicks just like the next guy, I have to admit: Movies were better back then!
But maybe that's just because I was a kid, and an eight year old boy who watches STAR WARS: EPISODE I feels just the same...
I doubt it though.
Anway... one of the aforementioned movies is getting its compulsive remake: ROB COHEN director of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, DAYLIGHT or the soon to be released THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR will produce but not direct (phew...) the MONSTER SQUAD REMAKE according to bloody-disgusting.com.

Well after the recent INDIANA JONES REMAKE I guess we can prepare for more makeovers of classic movies.
So who's with me for a BUCKAROO BANZAI Remake?

Deadlinehollywood reports that QUENTIN TARANTINO met BRAD PITT yesterday to offer him the lead in his new WWII movie INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, thats scheduled to start shooting in October.
Digitalspy confirms the BRAD PITT meeting and adds LEO DiCAPRIO.
PITT and DiCAPRIO in a TARANTINO flick? This is huge...

Meanwhile New York Entertainment is speculating about a possible and whishful cast for other 'Bastards'. Though I have to disagree on some the suggestions. Stallone and Schwarzenegger? Come on. Unless they fight against IVAN DRAGO I vote no for both!

Variety published a press release today in which U.S. pay-tv channel SHOWTIME and THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY announcing a newly signed deal. Since this is all business talk, I just quote the important part of the release, which kinda stunned me:

Other TWC/Dimension movies coming up for scheduling on Showtime include a modern remake of "Seven Samurai"; "All Good Things," with Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst; "The 6 Billion Dollar Man"; "Scream 4"; and "Piranha 3D."

Okay, that we could sooner or late expect a SCREAM sequel ain't that stunning. But a remake of AKIRA KUROSAWAS THE SEVEN SAMURAI which is without a doubt one of the top ten movies in movie-history, is BIG NEWS. Since not much is known about this project I can't write anything more about this. But as soon as I get new information on the remake, you'll find it here!

*UPDATE*
I did some research on that curious SEVEN SAMURAI REMAKE. So basically what I found out is that it's kinda old news. So sorry if you already knew it, I for sure didn't. The remake was already announced in August 2007 when THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY published a studio briefing annoucing an investment of $ 285 million in Asian-themed projects.
Status Quo is, that JOHN FUSCO will write the screenplay for the remake and probably direct the movie aswell. Fusco wrote the scripts for several known movies including YOUNG GUNS I & II, HIDALGO and the recent JET LI and JACKIE CHAN crossover FORGOTTEN KINGDOM.

This week several pre-screenings of THE DARK KNIGHT were held in the U.S. and the first reviews are making their way to the net. To date, I haven't read a single bad one. Quite the opposite. The more I read, the more I come to the conclusion, that THE DARK KNIGHT could be a "one of a kind" picture, instead of "just another superhero flick".
Here is a snippet of Massawyrm from aintitcool:

I love The Incredible Hulk. I love the living shit out of Iron Man. And as you all know, Hellboy 2 made me squeal with childish glee. But this? This is the first Oscar quality superhero movie. This is the one we will look back upon 20 years from now and hold it to be superior to most everything that came after it. I want to say that this is like Wrath of Khan or Superman 2, but really this is better than that. This is The Empire Strikes Back of superhero films.

Here is an excerpt of Quints review:

I can say without any hesitation that THE DARK KNIGHT is a spectacular piece of storytelling, that it is as giant a leap forward from the first film as EMPIRE did from STAR WARS or that Godfather Part II did from the first, that all this talk of Heath Ledger being nominated for his work as The Joker isn’t just industry buzz capitalizing on the tragic and far too premature death of the actor. He will be nominated and he would have been nominated had he been alive to see the film open.

The good reviews seem to reach the potential customers: Movietickets.com reports, that THE DARK KNIGHT hast the third highest advance ticket sales of all time, beating movies like SPIDER-MAN 3 or LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS. Only two movies manages to pre-sell more tickets: STAR WARS: EPISODE III - REVENGE OF THE SITH and HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.

More Quotes from people who've seen the movie:

From TIME MAGAZIN:
[Ledgers Joker] "is simply one of the most twisted and mesmerizing creeps in movie history."

From the associated press by Christy Lemire:
"The Dark Knight is an epic that will leave you staggering from the theater, stunned by its scope and complexity."

Critic David Edward:
Heath Ledger is "a dead cert" to win the Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker. Edwards says that the late actor "is the brilliant heart of a superhero movie that's like nothing you've ever seen before. ... the finest superhero movie in years."

HYPEHYPEHYPEHYPE!

Gamespot reports that WARNER BROS and CAPCOM are teaming up for an adaption of the First Person Shooter LOST PLANET. Writer DAVID HAYTER (WATCHMEN, X-MEN, X2) who's also working on the script of the METAL GEAR SOLID movie (and by the way is the voice of SOLID SNAKE) will provide the screeenplay, which I guess, is a good thing.
Capcom announced this at the E3 that is curently taking place in Los Angeles.

Appearantly BIG ROSS over at CC2K got a first glimpse on PAUL W.S. ANDERSON'S (RESIDENT EVIL) CASTLEVANIA script.
CASTLEVANIA is one of my favourite videogame franchises and it would really piss me off, if this would be another wack "game to screen" adaption. Unfortunately the script seem to suck:

"Does Anderson have any idea how fucking cool it would be to bring in some of these experts to choreograph all of the stunts and fight scenes with a similar chain whip? Obviously not because he chose to arm Castlevania’s hero with a fucking sword. Idiot."

Way to go Mr. Anderson. Why not make Simon Belmont a hot Chick with guns instead of using the basic trademark of the franchise - the whip - and call it a day? FFS...
(Saw this on Aintitcool)

Why is this a big deal?
Because this flick features RICKY GERVAIS the mastermind behind THE OFFICE and one of my favourite shows EXTRAS, in a movie written and directed by DAVID KOEPP (author of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTALL SKULL and movies like CARLITO'S WAY and SPIDER-MAN).
Movie is about a cynical doctor (Gervais) who basically hates every living human being around him. After being dead for several minutes he suddenly can see and talk to dead people ( hence the term GHOSTS in the title). Guess what? He hates them too...

Check out the trailer on the official GHOST TOWN website

As expected GUILERMO DEL TORO and his HELLBOY scored not great but big enough at this weekends BOX OFFICE. The GOLDEN ARMY grossed $ 35 million and kicked HANCOCK from the throne. Still WILL SMITH can be very pleased with $ 33 million in the second week grossing a total of $ 165 million in the U.S.

According to Variety JACK BLACK, director RICHARD LINKLATER and writer MIKE WHITE are teaming up again for SCHOOL OF ROCK: AMERICA ROCKS.
The original film costed only $ 30 million and grossed a total of $ 130 million worldwide, making it a huge success for Paramount Pictures.

I just saw the sequel to 2004s Hellboy, a comic adaptation by Guillermo del Toro who also brought us the acclaimed Pan's Labyrinth. I thought the first Hellboy was good but could have been better. It had a good amount of action and humor and not to forget - Hellboy, played by Ron Perlman. But it also had Rupert Evans as agent John Myers who somewhat seemed to play a bigger role in the story than the red guy himself. Which was OK since Hellboy still delivered all the oneliners and action you were hoping for. Still, people thought Myers didn't fit in that well and wanted the focus more on Hellboy himself. Well, in part two, Agent Myers isn't part of the crew anymore. Seacreature Abe returns as well as Selma Blair in her role as the flaming lady Liz. Joining them is a German scientist by the name of Johann Kraus (voiced by Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane) whose special ability is that he actually is made of steam and can even give live to inanimate things. Sort of. Unfortunately, no background to this character is delivered whatsoever, leaving his character somewhat empty, pretty much like the suit he wears. What are they up against? The golden Army.

Or more likely, the people trying to awaken the golden army. And by people I mean prince Nuada, the son of king Balor and brother of princess Nuala, with whom he is deeply connected. What is very well done in the movie is, that he isn't just a typical bad guy who just wants to destroy everything and kill everyone. He actually fights for a cause that in his eyes is right and is comprehendible. So he isn't just plain bad, he is just looking at the world from a different angle. And as pretty much all my friends and I agreed, he is the most detailed character in Hellboy 2.

I wish that could be said of Hellboy himself too. While there is a little flashback to his youth, he remains very shallow. Of course you can argue that in an action flick you don't really need much depth and definitely not for a character such as Hellboy anyhow, but in this case I disagree. Especially when the sequel clearly builds on the mentioned character and tries to give him depth by exploring his personal life and relationship with his girlfriend. Unfortunately, here the movie fails too, because any conflict between Hellboy and Liz that arises, is never really explained or too trivial and therefore feels too unimportant to really be a conflict to begin with. So Hellboy never surpasses the stage of delivering oneliners, which makes it hard to really get attached to this character but ultimately is so vital since the focus is much more him. And many of his lines feel too familiar from the first film.

What really made this movie stand out though were the visuals. First off, I personally would like to thank del Toro for trying to use as little CGI as possible. You can clearly tell, that whenever there was an opportunity to do something without using computer effects, it was done the good ol' fashioned way. A lot of the creatures in the film are masks or puppets. And they just look a lot more realistic. Screw you Lucas! And your army of CGI clones! Second off, the design of the creatures you see in the movie was incredible. Some of the stuff could easily have been straight out of Pan's Labyrinth. And there are so many different kinds of creatures too. The only design I did not like unfortunately, was the one for the golden army. You can see them in the trailer already so I am not spoilering anything, but to me their round shape wasn't threatening at all. We are talking about the meanest, unstoppable, brutal army that this planet has ever seen and then they look like a cross between a sumowrestler and a blowup rubber ball?!

Overall I am disappointed by Hellboy 2. Maybe because of all the great reviews it received prior to release. But then again my friends didn't read any and also said it could have been better. The movie has a lot going for it. The great visuals foremost, but when you strip that away, the plot shows a lot of weak spots. Too soon you know how it will all end. Also the pacing to me felt too slow. Like a rollercoasters that doesn't have a climax. But still, Hellboy 2 has some beauty in it and makes a decent action film, just not a great one though.
